Comedians are comedians and will remain comedians but could never become Heroes even if they score few hits by playing the lead roles. Here is a strong example to back the above statement. A hero's image and fan following will stay forever as the fans would stay loyal to his successors. That is not the case with Comedians and character artistes.
People love to see their comedy, but won't turn their loyal fans unless they have equally talented sons. Look at Brahmanandam! He is inarguably the best comedian that Telugu screen has ever seen. He gets roaring applause whenever he pops up on screen. But his son Gautham was rejected as a hero. Despite Brahmi's desperate attempts Gautham is struggling to find offers.
Same is the case with MS Narayana's son Vikram. After getting fed up with heroic attempts he shifted to villain roles. Babu Mohan's son and few other character actors sons failed to become stars despite having strong background. Even Nata Kireeti Rajendra Prasad has been finding it tough to launch his son Balaji as a hero. This is because of his comedic image. Only heroes with mass following have the privilege. Their sons are born stars!
